Light Rail Maintenance and Repairs

UPDATE: January 24, 2025

Two overnight extended maintenance windows are scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 25, and Sunday, Jan. 26, between Florida and Southmoor stations. The 12-hour maintenance windows will temporarily impact weekend light rail service on the H and R lines between 4:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on both days.

During a separate three-day period on Tuesday, Jan. 28, through Thursday, Jan. 30, RTD will perform track maintenance between Southmoor and I-25•Broadway stations. Bus shuttles will replace light rail trains between the affected stations to continue providing connections for customers. Multiple bus routes provide alternate service and connections in the area, and customers are encouraged to use RTD’s Next Ride app to explore the other available options.

During the three-day period, crews will focus their efforts on the Southeast Corridor, with a goal of completing all necessary work and removing the remaining speed restrictions in Slow Zone #1. Instead of continuing to do work during limited overnight maintenance windows, RTD staff has extended the window to occur over three days, prioritizing and expediting the necessary work. While the agency’s goal is to remove the remaining speed restrictions in Slow Zone #1 following the three-day disruption, it will be dependent on several factors, including inclement weather that could impact the work’s completion.

Maintenance and Repairs

Preventative maintenance and isolated track repairs are currently underway along the Southeast Corridor. As repairs are made, speed restrictions will continue to be lifted. The resumption of normal train speeds is dependent on how quickly repairs are made to the isolated sections of track.

Maintenance schedules are subject to change, and timelines will be updated to reflect any necessary schedule adjustments.

Speed Restrictions

Light rail speed restrictions are in place for D, E, H, and R line trains traveling along the Southeast Corridor. The 10 mile-per-hour speed restrictions were implemented on June 4 and will be in place until crews complete the necessary preventative maintenance. As repairs are made to isolated sections of track, speed restrictions will continue to be lifted.

Light Rail Inspections

RTD conducts regular inspections of its entire light rail system. The intent of inspections is to identify preventive maintenance that may need to be addressed in the near-term or future. This proactive approach allows the agency to ensure all rail assets are in a state of good repair.
